Breast Enlargement

Breast enlargement is a procedure that uses an implant to increase the size of the breast and reshape it in the desired way. Breast surgery is performed using an implant selected by the patient and surgeon together. The choice depends on the person’s body type and the desired result.

Feel confident

Breast augmentation surgery is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world. The benefits of breast surgery include the visible aesthetic benefits (beautifully fitting clothes, fuller and more feminine breasts). In addition, feeling good about the way you look and other related emotional benefits (increased self-confidence and higher self-esteem). It is important to emphasise that breast augmentation should always be a woman’s own internal desire, not imposed by external pressure.

Health Clinic offers the largest selection of implants in Estonia, top surgeons and specialists with international experience, whose collaboration consistently delivers the best possible results.

Who is breast surgery suitable for?

The shape and size of the breasts are not only an important part of a woman’s figure, but also an important aspect of a woman’s sexual self-image and self-perception. Women often struggle with emotional discomfort caused by breasts that are too small or otherwise disproportionate in size or shape compared to their overall body shape. While this does not have a direct physical effect, it can have a negative impact on a woman’s self-esteem.

Breast surgery is suitable if:
In addition to congenital breast hypoplasia (underdeveloped mammary glands), women who have given birth and are breastfeeding often also need cosmetic surgery. Women with very small breasts may want more feminine and proportionate breasts. Motherhood is indeed wonderful, but sometimes after breastfeeding, a plastic surgeon’s help may be needed to restore a woman’s former beauty and youthfulness.

What implants do we use?

Health Clinic offers the largest selection of breast implants in Estonia. Our surgeons use implants such as Motiva, Polytech, Nagor, Sebbin on a daily basis and we also offer the world’s only lightweight implants B-Lite.

All implants in our selection are of the highest quality and only from manufacturers with the best test results.

What to consider before surgery?

Before surgery, it is necessary to perform a mammogram or ultrasound examination of the breasts to rule out any nodules (ultrasound for those under 35 years old, mammogram for older women), as well as blood tests. Before the planned surgery, you should be in as good health as possible. Smoking must be stopped one month before surgery. Alcohol consumption should also be kept to a minimum. Under no circumstances should you use aspirin or similar medications for at least 14 days before surgery (as they have a blood-thinning effect). We also do not recommend taking products containing omega-3 before the surgery. It is recommended to plan for seven to ten days off for recovery after the surgery, as movement is initially limited after the surgery. It is also a good idea to allow yourself sufficient rest to recover comfortably.

Hospital stay

Generally, you will have to spend one night in the hospital after the surgery, under the supervision of experienced hospital staff.

Anaesthesia

Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia, which means that the patient does not feel any part of the surgery. Before surgery, the anaesthesiologist conducts the necessary examinations and discussions to ensure safety during the operation.

How is the surgery performed?

The surgery takes about 30-60 minutes. The exact technique depends on the patient’s anatomical characteristics and personal preferences, as well as the surgeon’s recommendations. Ultimately, the operating surgeon decides on the methodology, but the patient’s personal preferences are always taken into account.

In general, the procedure is as follows: a 4-5 cm incision is made under the breast, as discreetly as possible. The incision is followed by the creation of a pocket for the implant behind the mammary gland or muscle. The selected implant is placed in the pocket and the wounds are closed with dissolvable sutures.

After breast surgery

The breasts are painful in the first few days because they are tight due to the implants. As a result, normal mobility (especially of the upper body) is limited and the doctor will prescribe painkillers if necessary. The sutures dissolve naturally, though some knots may need to be removed starting from the 14th day.

At first, the wound is red and hard to the touch, but after a few months it becomes lighter and blends with the rest of the skin. You can usually start using special scar-healing ointments after about four weeks. Be sure to protect the wound from the sun for at least six months.

Depending on how you feel, you can start doing lighter daily activities after a few days. Breast augmentation, like any other surgery, is a traumatic experience for the body, which is why exercise is allowed after six weeks.

Initially, you should also wear a special supportive bra. The surgeon will usually tell you the exact time for wearing it. Generally, it is recommended to wear it 24 hours a day for four weeks, followed by another few weeks for 12 hours a day. Often, the patient will also have to wear a special strap on the upper part of the breasts to help the implants settle into the correct position and sink sufficiently. The need and duration of wearing this strap are always determined by the doctor individually.

Although the successful result of the surgery is visible almost immediately, the final result still takes up to six months to develop. Initially, the breast may feel hard, but over time it will become soft and more natural again. Due to the hypersensitivity of the nipples, nipple protection may be necessary. It may take months to regain normal sensitivity.

FEEDBACK

What do our patients think?

Breast surgery and important questions

Candidates for the surgery are healthy women who are unhappy with the shape or size of their breasts and women who need post-pregnancy corrective surgery. After childbirth, in some cases it is necessary to combine breast augmentation and breast lift surgery to achieve the best results. A suitable candidate must always want the surgery themselves and should not undergo it due to external pressure.

Disproportionate breast size or shape.
Sagging skin on the breasts due to aging, breastfeeding or after childbirth.
Poor quality of life due to low self-esteem.
A damaged sexual self-image due to lack of self-confidence.

The weight of breast implants depends on the size of the implants, for traditional implants it can generally be estimated that 1 millilitre (ml) = 1 gram (g). For example, a 365 ml implant weighs 365 g. Thanks to their lightness, B-Lite breast implants weigh up to 30 percent less than traditional implants. In the same example, a 365 ml B-Lite implant weighs only 273 g.

Every woman is unique and her appearance is just as special. Our surgeons will work with you to find the best solution. In general, we follow the principle of proportionality and do not recommend implants that vary too much in terms of your height and other physical characteristics.

Initially, nipple sensitivity may indeed temporarily decrease after surgery. However, nipples can also become hypersensitive, which is why it is sometimes necessary to use nipple protection.  Normal sensitivity usually returns within a few weeks after the procedure.

Yes, it is possible to breastfeed after a standard breast augmentation surgery, but if breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift, the ability to breastfeed may be impaired or lost entirely. This depends on the breast lift method used by the surgeon. However, it should be emphasised that breast augmentation is not recommended if you plan to become pregnant in the near future and it is also not recommended to have the surgery before six months after finishing breastfeeding, if you want to correct your breasts after having a child.

Some modern mammography machines have special programmes for breasts with implants. You should confirm the availability of such equipment with the clinic performing the examination. It is always possible to have an ultrasound examination with implants. After surgery, we recommend that you have a breast examination every two to three years.

In some cases, an implant may move out of its “pocket” or rotate. But this happens very rarely. In this case, the implant must be put back in place, often the surgeon can do this manually, but in some cases corrective surgery may be necessary.

Every woman is unique, as is the elasticity of her skin. Breastfeeding can affect the shape of the breasts, because during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the mammary glands enlarge, which also stretches the skin of the breast. Often, however, breasts with implants are as beautiful after breastfeeding as they were before. Everything is very individual.

Breast implant complications and risks

Breast augmentation is a relatively minor surgery, but every surgery has certain risks. Rare problems immediately after the surgery can include bleeding and infection. Rapid intervention and stopping the bleeding generally helps to prevent complications. Infection usually responds well to antibiotic treatment.

Yes, if it becomes clear during the consultation that breast augmentation surgery is not advisable for medical reasons, or if the patient’s expectations are unrealistic, the surgeon has the right to refuse the procedure. It is important to understand that surgery can change the shape and size of the breasts to a certain extent and if the surgeon believes that it is not possible to carry out the patient’s wishes exactly as they have imagined, then it is necessary to carefully consider whether the surgery is worth pursuing.

Our goal is for people to feel happy and gain confidence after the surgery. We do not want anyone to be disappointed with the result after surgery. Therefore, it is important to clearly express your wishes during the consultation with the surgeon and carefully listen to whether the surgeon believes it is achievable.

Breast implant rupture is extremely rare, but there is nothing you can do to prevent it and there is no need to worry about it. Wrinkling of implants over time is a possible side effect, but it depends on a wide range of factors, including the characteristics of the implant. The thinner the person, the more noticeable the wrinkling might be, but this is often resolved by placing the implants under the pectoral muscle.

The natural feel of the breast depends on the patient’s existing breast tissue, the desired result and the size of the implant. Implants do not provide a completely natural feel upon touch, but modern implants are designed to be as realistic as possible while giving the breast a beautiful shape, form and fullness.

Modern breast implants are designed to last a lifetime and, unless there are any medical complications, there is no reason to replace them.

No, separate maintenance of the implants is not necessary. However, it is a good idea to wear good quality supportive bras and have regular ultrasound examinations (every two to three years).

In theory, an allergic reaction to silicone can occur, but this is extremely rare. Silicone is widely used in our daily lives, e.g. in chewing gum, soap, hand cream, etc.

Allergic reactions after surgery can be caused by the medications administered. Before the procedure, be sure to discuss all important things with your surgeon, including allergies and medications.

Preparing for breast implant surgery

Breast augmentation is recommended for adult women and this decision must be 100% well-thought-out. However, there is no upper age limit, which means that breast augmentation surgery can be performed up to a very old age. The most important thing is to be in good health.

As you will only need to spend one night in the hospital after breast surgery, you only need to bring personal hygiene items, everything else is generally already provided by the hospital. Food is organised by the hospital, but you can bring a drink and light snacks if you wish. Also, bring a good mood and a positive attitude!

It is advisable not to wear make-up or jewellery when coming to the surgery and to remove contact lenses and piercings. If your nails are varnished, the varnish should be light or transparent.

Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Exercise in the fresh air and get enough rest. Fluid intake should also be sufficient to keep the body in good overall condition before surgery. Smoking should be stopped before surgery. If possible, at least one month before. Alcohol consumption should definitely be limited. Under no circumstances should you use aspirin or similar medications for at least 14 days before surgery, as they have a blood-thinning effect. We also recommend avoiding preparations containing omega-3 fatty acids. The use of medications and supplements should be discussed with your surgeon.

The doctor will provide detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to ensure the recovery process is as pleasant and complication-free as possible. All our patients receive follow-up care instructions. Painkillers will also be prescribed if necessary. After surgery, we recommend light exercise, such as short walks, to get the blood circulating in the body. This ensures a faster recovery and is also good for mental health. However, it is important not to overdo it and to listen to your body in every situation!

Be sure to discuss which medications you are taking during the consultation, as some medications and health conditions make it impossible to perform the surgery. Contraceptives and antidepressants are generally not contraindicated for surgery, but you should still discuss the timing of their use with your doctor.

Since it is a relatively minor surgery, we recommend taking a week off.

Breast augmentation surgeries are performed in a modern private hospital with 24-hour monitoring and an intensive care unit if needed, as well as experienced medical staff and supportive and friendly customer service.

Yes, breast augmentation surgeries are performed under general anaesthesia by an experienced and certified anaesthesiologist.

Recovery from breast implant surgery

We are always available if the need arises. We provide information during the consultation about what to consider before and after the procedure. The follow-up care instructions include contact details for all of our Patient Coordinators and you can always contact your personal coordinator who has been taking care of you from day one.

For emergency health issues, please go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital and be sure to inform us as well.

Some pain is normal after surgery, as it is still a surgical procedure. However, if the pain lasts for weeks, is sharp and interferes with daily life and activities, please contact us.

Typical symptoms are temporary stabbing pain, some swelling and bruising and a “hard” feeling in the breasts. All of these symptoms generally disappear within a few weeks.

However, if you notice fluid leaking from your breasts, causing lumps under the skin, a high fever, sharp persistent pain in the breasts and severe swelling and redness, please contact us and, if necessary, go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital.

The most important thing is to get plenty of rest and follow the wound care instructions given in the follow-up care guidelines. A special bra must be worn for four to six weeks (in some cases longer, depending on the location of the implant) and you should refrain from active sports. You can then resume your life as it was before the surgery, as there are no direct restrictions. You can do sports, go to the sauna and do many other exciting things.

You can take a shower from the second day after the surgery. Wounds are not afraid of water or soap, the water should be a little cooler than usual. You can take a shower with or without the dressings. Avoid baths and saunas until the wounds have fully healed.

After the surgery, you should sleep on your back for five to ten days, after ten days you can sleep on your side or however you feel most comfortable. We do not recommend sleeping on your stomach for at least two months.

Initial recovery takes about four weeks, but breast tightness can last for about eight weeks. The final result can be seen only after six months. Over time, the breast will become soft and natural again. Due to the hypersensitivity of the nipples, nipple protection may be necessary. It may take months to regain normal sensitivity.

You should eat a nutritious and healthy diet and drink enough water. There are no specific dietary restrictions. Since your well-being and mood also improve after surgery, there may be a natural desire/need to eat healthier.

This is quite individual and largely depends on the sport, but you can usually resume your normal exercise routine after six weeks. If the implants are placed under the pectoral muscle, you will need to take a break from certain gym exercises for up to six months (e.g. chin-ups, chest presses, etc.). If the implants are placed under the pectoral muscle, you should not raise your arms above your shoulders for at least three weeks.

There are no restrictions on flying, as changes in cabin pressure do not affect implants.

There are no restrictions on driving, but it would be advisable to have someone else drive you on the day you leave the hospital. Turning the steering wheel may be affected, so you need to reassess your ability to drive.

It is advisable to plan to have children before breast augmentation, but there are no actual obstacles to having children after implants. It is important that you have recovered from the surgery and are in good health. Surgeons usually recommend waiting at least six months after surgery before trying to conceive.

During the surgery, a 4-5 cm incision is made under the breast, as discreetly as possible. The post-operative scars will fade and become less noticeable over time. The final result depends on the elasticity of the skin and other factors. For implants placed through an incision under the breast, the scars are relatively unnoticeable because the scar is covered by the breast itself. Scar fading usually takes about one to two years.

No, smoking is not recommended after surgery until the healing process is complete. Smoking impairs circulation and can negatively impact wound healing and the final surgical outcome.

After breast implants are placed, scar tissue, or a capsule, forms around the implant. This is a completely natural process. In very rare cases, the capsule may harden, which can cause the breast to change shape and become harder and more painful. In such cases, a follow-up surgery may be needed to remove the capsule and replace the breast implant. Typically, such a capsule forms very slowly, over a period of about 2-10 years.

It is not recommended to expose the wound to the sun for at least the first six months. It can change the colour of the scar and make it more noticeable. We definitely recommend using a sunscreen with a strong SPF factor!

We recommend starting sports no earlier than six weeks after the procedure. For swimming, you should wait at least two months, as upper body movement is initially restricted. It is important not to put excessive strain on the chest area during recovery.
