Septoplasty

Surgical correction of the nasal septum, also known as septoplasty, is a medical procedure designed to correct the curvature of the nasal septum. The nasal septum is a structure made of cartilage and bone that separates the nose into two halves. If it is crooked or deformed, it can cause breathing difficulties and other problems.

Indications for the procedure

The main goal of septoplasty is to improve nasal breathing, but it also has an effect on other health problems associated with breathing obstructions, such as sleep apnoea, hypertension, headaches and nosebleeds.

Additional information on the procedure

Description of the procedure

Preparation: Septoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia, which is why you must not eat or drink on the morning of the surgery.

Surgery: The surgeon makes an incision in the front part of the nose to access the supporting structures of the septum. If necessary, the position of the cartilage and bone is corrected by cutting or reshaping them. The duration of the procedure usually varies from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Recovery: The surgery is usually performed as a day surgery procedure and you can go home the same afternoon or evening. At the end of the surgery, tampons or splints may be placed in the nasal passages to stabilise the nose. They are usually removed 1-7 days after surgery. The initial recovery period usually lasts 2-3 weeks. During this time, nasal breathing may be disturbed and the nose must be cleaned with saline daily.

Risks and possible complications

As with any surgical procedure, septoplasty has potential risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Persistent breathing difficulties
  • Changes in the shape or asymmetry of the nose

Recovery tips

After septoplasty, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions to ensure the best possible recovery. This includes:

  • Avoiding physical exertion for the first two weeks.
  • Daily nasal cleaning as directed by your doctor.
  • Antibacterial treatment as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Taking painkillers, if necessary.

Septoplasty can significantly improve your quality of life by providing better breathing and thereby reducing associated health problems.
