Breast reduction is a surgery designed to reduce uncomfortably large breasts. Depending on the original size of the breasts, it is generally possible to achieve the desired breast shape.
Free yourself from the burden
There are women who have been given breasts that are disproportionately large compared to the rest of their bodies. The size and weight of the breasts can restrict movement and limit sports opportunities. Also, many clothes do not fit and it can be difficult to find the right size. Large breasts can cause skin problems under the breasts, posture problems, tension in the shoulders and back and even headaches. Women with overly large breasts often have problems with self-confidence and body image, and may also have mental health problems, as large breasts have caused insecurity from a young age. Often, very large breasts also accentuate the asymmetry of the breasts that is naturally present in every woman. In this case, breast reduction may be one solution.
If you are considering breast reduction surgery, it is important to consult a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss your expectations, potential risks and recovery process. The surgeon will help you understand if this procedure is right for you and give you information about what to expect from the surgery.

What can be changed with breast reduction surgery
Whether breast reduction is realistically achievable will be determined in consultation with a surgeon. Often, in addition to a breast reduction, a breast lift is also required and the nipples are repositioned to a new, higher location. Breast reduction also offers the opportunity to correct differences in breast size and/or shape (asymmetry).
The ability to breastfeed may be limited in some cases after surgery. If you wish to become pregnant, it would therefore make sense to plan this operation for a later time.
Preparing for surgery
Before surgery, it is necessary to perform a mammogram or ultrasound examination of the breasts to rule out any nodules (ultrasound for those under 35 years old, mammogram for older women), as well as blood tests. Before the planned surgery, you should be in as good health as possible.
Smoking should be stopped one month before surgery. Smoking impairs microcirculation in the surgical area and thus prevents wound healing. Under no circumstances should you use preparations containing aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid for at least 14 days before surgery.
Since you will need to refrain from active movement both at work and in your personal life for at least a week after the surgery, it would be good to plan ahead to have someone take care of you during the recovery period, discuss post-operative care instructions with this person.
Hospital stay
A one-day hospital stay is typically recommended. The exact duration of hospital stay is decided by the doctor and agreed upon with the patient.
Anaesthesia
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia, so the patient sleeps throughout the surgery. Before surgery, the anaesthesiologist conducts the necessary examinations and discussions to ensure a suitable anaesthesia.
Surgery
The surgery usually takes 2 to 3.5 hours. In most cases, the removal of excess glandular and fatty tissue from the lower part of the breast is combined with repositioning the nipple upward, and, if necessary, reducing the nipple size. The exact technique is decided by the surgeon performing the operation. Depending on the size of the breast, different techniques are used, which will determine the location of the scars.
These can occur
– around the nipple and directly downward
– around the nipple, downward and to the side if the breast is significantly sagging
– around the nipple and in an inverted T-shape
Breast reduction and the course of surgery
First, the expected incision sites and the new location of the nipples are marked on the skin. After preparing the surgical area, the necessary incisions are made. Then, as much skin and tissue as previously planned is removed and the nipples are repositioned and secured in their new location. Finally, the skin under the nipples is brought together to form a new breast.
The stitches are usually placed around the nipples and vertically to the breast fold. For larger breasts or severely sagging breasts, a horizontal incision at the breast fold is needed, resulting in an L-shaped or inverted T-shaped scar. After surgery, a bandage or special bra is applied to counteract the post-operative swelling. Small drainage tubes may be necessary to help remove wound fluid during the initial post-operative period.
After surgery
Recovery after breast reduction surgery varies, but most patients can return to daily activities within about two weeks. However, physical exertion and heavy lifting should generally be avoided for at least a month. It can take up to six months to fully heal and see final results.
There are risks associated with surgery, such as infection, bruising, changes in nipple sensitivity and scarring, but in most cases, patients consider the lasting positive effects of the results to be more important. To avoid risks, wounds must be cared for according to the recommendations received from the clinic and based on the doctor’s instructions.
After surgery, patients must wear a special support bra to help support the breasts and ensure optimal healing. The exact duration of wearing this bra will be decided by the surgeon.
The recovery period is individual and often depends on the extent of the surgery.
