Breast Lift

A breast lift provides the opportunity to improve the shape, height, size, and position of the breasts. Additionally, the surgery can correct breast asymmetry. The shape of the breasts is influenced by the loss of skin elasticity due to aging, the effect of gravity, as well as other factors such as weight fluctuations, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Take your confidence to a new level

A woman’s breast shape changes over time and the breasts may lose their previous shape. This is a perfectly normal part of ageing. The change usually does not cause any physical problems, but it can affect the way you feel about yourself and your body and therefore your overall confidence. Seeing your own naked body and walking around without a bra is often uncomfortable and creates insecurity.

When a woman does not feel good and comfortable in her own body, it often affects the quality of her sex life and consequently her intimate relationships. Women who have undergone breast lift surgery say that their self-confidence, appearance and mood improve. Breast lifting and correction allow women to enhance their quality of life and get rid of the insecurities that cause sadness.

Additional information on the procedure

What is a breast lift?

Breast lift and correction, or mastopexy, is the lifting and reshaping of sunken and sagging breasts. Even low-positioned nipples are raised to a higher, more youthful position. In the case of small breasts, such as after pregnancy, there may be a desire to increase the size of the breasts. This can be done with breast implants, combining a breast lift with a breast augmentation surgery.

The ability to breastfeed may be affected by the breast lift surgery, but it largely depends on the surgical technique and this will be discussed during the consultation with your surgeon. When planning this surgery, it should be considered that pregnancy can cause the breasts to sag again. Therefore, it is wise to plan the surgery for after pregnancy.

How to prepare for surgery?

Before surgery, it is necessary to perform a mammogram or ultrasound examination of the breasts to rule out any nodules (ultrasound for those under 35 years old, mammogram for older women), as well as blood tests.
Before the planned surgery, you should be in as good physical shape as possible. Smoking impairs not only general blood circulation but also microcirculation in the surgical area, so it is important to stop smoking at least one month before surgery if possible. Under no circumstances should you use aspirin or similar medications for at least 14 days before surgery (as they have a blood-thinning effect). It is advisable to discuss the use of medications and supplements with your surgeon.

You will have to refrain from active movement for at least a week after the surgery, both at work and in your personal life. If possible, ask someone (a partner, a good friend or relative) to look after you after the surgery. Be sure to discuss the post-operative care instructions carefully. It is advisable to get plenty of rest in the days leading up to the surgery so that you can go into the surgery mentally and physically prepared. If you have any further questions or concerns before the surgery, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hospital stay

Generally, we recommend staying in the hospital for one day. The exact length of hospital stay is decided and agreed by the surgeon.

Anaesthesia

Breast lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. This means the patient will be asleep throughout the surgery.

Course of the surgery

The surgery usually takes between 1.5 to 3.5 hours. Techniques may vary. The most commonly used method is to reshape the sagging tissue, along with lifting and, if necessary, reducing the nipple. If implants are also placed, this is done without making an additional incision. The implant is placed in a pocket above or below the pectoral muscle.

Depending on the extent of sagging, different techniques are used. Depending on the method used, the scars will be located in different locations.

These can be:
– in a circle around the nipple
– around the nipple and vertically downwards
– around the nipple, vertically downwards and to the side
or in the case of more significant sagging:
– around the nipple and in an inverted T-shape

FEEDBACK

What do our patients think?

Breast lift and important questions

Since the shape and size of a woman’s breasts change over time, this may lead to a decline in self-esteem and therefore daily dissatisfaction. The changes are often due to childbirth and breastfeeding, but also ageing and the resulting loss of skin elasticity and genetics.

Breast lifts are generally not medically necessary, it is important more in the context of self-esteem and quality of life. Breast lift has a positive impact on intimate relationships as well as satisfaction with yourself and those around you. Breast lift and correction is a personal decision, but consulting a doctor can help you better understand the procedure.

No, generally not. It is a relatively routine surgery that lasts about 1.5 to 3 hours. Since the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, prior consultation with an anaesthesiologist is necessary to ensure that anaesthesia is not contraindicated.

Breast lift means lifting sagging breasts that have lost volume to an appropriate height, making them firmer again and, if necessary, more symmetrical. Usually, during the surgery, the position of the nipples is also corrected to give the breasts a more youthful appearance.

Breast augmentation, on the other hand, primarily involves increasing the size of the breasts with silicone implants or fat transfer, although the surgery also improves the shape and form of the breasts.

Before the surgery, at least one consultation with the operating surgeon will take place to determine if the procedure is suitable for the patient. It is also necessary to have a mammogram or ultrasound scan to rule out any lumps in the breasts and to have a blood test. If it turns out that breast lift surgery is not advisable (e.g. for medical reasons), the surgeon has the right to refuse the procedure. It is important to remember that every surgeon’s decision is made considering the patient’s wishes, but with their best interests and safety in mind!

It is important to understand that surgery can change the shape and size of the breasts to a certain extent. If the surgeon believes that it is not possible to carry out your wish exactly as you have imagined, you should carefully consider whether the surgery is worth pursuing.

It can happen, but usually only because of pregnancy and breastfeeding. If the skin is naturally less elastic than usual, the breasts may sag again a few years after surgery. It is always individual.

Yes. However, it should be considered that hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the skin’s elasticity. It may therefore be necessary to repeat the procedure after some time.

After a breast lift procedure, there is a possibility that breastfeeding may no longer be possible. The likelihood depends largely on how the surgery is performed and you can discuss this in detail during a consultation with your surgeon.

Breast lifts and corrections do not affect the cup size. If desired, this can be done using implants during an additional procedure.

Complications and risks of breast lift surgery

Breast lift surgery is generally safe, but there are always risks associated with any surgery. Rare problems immediately after the surgery can include bleeding and infection. Rapid intervention and stopping the bleeding generally helps to prevent complications. Infection usually responds well to antibiotic treatment. Over time, some asymmetry may occur, but it is important to note that no woman has perfectly symmetrical breasts.

Generally, breast lifts and corrections do not affect nipple sensitivity in the long term, unless the lifting is particularly large and complex. Sensitivity usually returns within six months.

No, there is no scientific evidence or patient experience to support this claim.

Preparing for breast lift surgery

Breast lift is recommended for adult women, as this decision must be 100% well-thought-out. There is no upper age limit and breast lift surgery can be performed up to a very old age.

Before your planned surgery, we recommend that you practice a healthy lifestyle and stay in good health. Nicotine and alcohol consumption should be limited and, if possible, avoided altogether. Smoking impairs microcirculation in the surgical area and can cause permanent disturbances during healing. Under no circumstances should you use preparations containing aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid for at least 14 days before surgery and we also recommend avoiding preparations containing omega-3 fatty acids.

Be sure to discuss which medications and supplements you are taking during the consultation, as some medications and health conditions make it impossible to perform the surgery. Contraceptives and antidepressants are generally not contraindicated for surgery. However, it is still worth discussing their use with your doctor. Before the surgery, you will also fill out an anaesthesia questionnaire at the hospital and based on that, the anaesthesiologist will determine the appropriate anaesthesia.

Since it is a relatively minor surgery, we recommend taking a week off.

Recovery from breast lift surgery

We are available if the need arises. We also provide information during the consultation about what to consider before and after the procedure. The follow-up care instructions include contact details for all of our Patient Coordinators and you can always contact your personal coordinator who has been taking care of you from day one.

For emergency health issues, please go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital and be sure to inform us as well.

In the first few weeks, we recommend avoiding physical exertion and lifting objects. The most important thing is to get plenty of rest and follow the wound care instructions given in the follow-up care guidelines. You can also start exercising after about four to six weeks.

A healthy diet also plays a role in recovery. A varied diet consisting of high-quality ingredients and plenty of fluids is recommended.

Depending on the extent of breast sagging, different techniques are used for correction, so the scars may be located in several ways around the nipple (e.g. circularly, vertically downwards or sideways). Post-operative scars fade as they heal and with time. The final result depends on the elasticity of the patient’s skin and other factors. Scar fading usually takes aboutone to two years.

You can start exercising again after four to six weeks. Be sure to monitor how you feel and, if necessary, seek advice from the clinic. Initially, you should be more cautious than usual when engaging in sports.

After the breast lift, you must wear special medical bras and the exact wearing period will be specified by the surgeon. Usually, this period lasts about one month.

It is not recommended to expose the wound to the sun. It can change the colour of the scar and make it more noticeable. We definitely recommend using a sunscreen with a strong SPF factor!
