Moles, also known as nevi, are pigmented benign skin formations composed of clusters of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin. Moles can be either congenital or acquired. However, it is known that very few newborns have nevi at birth and the majority of moles develop later in life.
Get rid of suspicious moles
The mechanisms behind nevi formation are not fully understood, but genetic factors, hormonal changes and ultraviolet radiation play a role. Moles can appear anywhere on the body and vary widely in shape, elevation, texture and colour. Unfortunately, some nevi have the potential to become malignant over time. It is therefore necessary to surgically remove such atypical or dysplastic nevi.
An atypical nevus is characterised by asymmetry, irregular borders, different shades of colour within the same mole and changes in size or shape. Generally, a dermatologist will assess whether a mole needs removal and will then refer the patient to a surgeon. In addition to moles, other benign skin formations can also occur (e.g. skin tags, warts, etc.).
Of course, surgical removal can always be indicated by the patient’s own wishes, because depending on the placement and colour of a mole or other skin formation, people do not always feel that these unique marks add aesthetic value.

Additional information on the procedure
Before surgical removal, our dermatologist examines the formations with a dermatoscope or we take a special photo of the nevus in the clinic with a dermatoscope and send it to a dermatologist for analysis. In the latter case, the dermatologist delivers the results within a few days (whether there are indications of atypia or malignancy) and gives their opinion on the need to remove the skin formation. It is also possible to come to the surgeon’s appointment with the results of a previous dermatological examination.
If the skin formation has been removed, it may be sent for histological examination (at the surgeon’s discretion) to determine whether the change was benign or malignant. Malignancy cannot be completely ruled out with visual or dermatoscopic examination alone. The results of the histological examination will be known within about two weeks after the procedure.
The total procedure time depends on the number and location of formations being removed, but typically takes 15-25 minutes per mole. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and stitches are required to close the wound. We always provide instructions for wound care and the removal of stitches. Daily activities and most work-related tasks can usually be resumed as normal after the procedure.
