Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear correction surgery, can be used to adjust the position of the ears so that they sit closer to the head. It is also possible to change the shape of the auricle and correct other aesthetic irregularities (such as elongated earlobes, the effects of previous trauma, etc.).

No more hiding your ears

Ears that noticeably stick out, have an unusual shape or show asymmetry can be a bothersome issue and a source of insecurity from early childhood.

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure that allows people to achieve an appearance that reduces insecurity by correcting the shape, size or position of the ears. This often life-changing surgery helps both children and adults who may feel insecure about prominent or asymmetrical ears. Otoplasty can give people the freedom to wear the hairstyle they like without fear of drawing unwanted attention to their ears. It is more than just an aesthetic change – it is an opportunity to feel comfortable in your own skin.

Additional information on the procedure

Course of surgery

The surgical method used to correct ears depends on the problem and is decided by the surgeon during the consultation.

For protruding ears, the incision is usually made on the back of the auricle to make the scar as invisible as possible. Excess skin on the back of the area is removed and the shape of the ear cartilage is changed in the course of the surgery.

Recovery from surgery

A compression bandage is wrapped around the head after corrective surgery on protruding ears, as it helps fix the ears in their new position.

For the first few weeks after otoplasty, you will need to wear a headband or bandage around your head at all times. From then on, you will need to wear a headband for one month primarily at night and when exercising. Avoid possible trauma to the ears. This means no contact sports etc. for a couple of months.

The wound will be closed with sutures, which will absorb in three to four weeks.

Smoking causes wounds to heal considerably slower and extends the recovery period, which is why it is recommended to quit smoking for at least a month before and after the surgery.

Surgical results

The results of ear reshaping are immediately visible, as the position and shape of the ears have noticeably changed.

It takes up to six months to completely heal after the surgery and see the final results.

FAQ

The surgery lasts one and a half to two hours and the patient can go home a few hours after surgery.

How long before I can exercise again following successful surgery on protruding ears?

You can carry on with your usual activities and light exercise one to two weeks after surgery. We recommend refraining from more strenuous exercise for one month after surgery and contact sports should be avoided for another two months.

What might the side effects of surgery be?

Side effects may include temporary post-surgery pain, numbness, swelling and redness. You might also develop a haematoma or wound infection. To prevent this risk, it is important to follow proper wound care.

We recommend protecting yourself from direct sunlight for around six months after surgery because the influence of sun radiation on skin pigment may render the scar darker and more noticeable.
