Obesity is a major problem that does not only affect our well-being but also our physical and mental health. However, losing weight is not always easy. There are cases where the problem can be medical and requires surgical intervention. Since the topic of obesity is quite delicate and arises many questions and fears, this time, we decided to write about the myths and the reality behind bariatric surgery.
Bariatric surgery is a field of medicine that aims to offer specific, immediate and measurable results for those who wish to lose weight. Our clinic offers the following surgeries: gastric balloon, gastric band, gastric plication, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery.
Myth: Bariatric surgery comes with a 100% weight loss guarantee.
Reality: This is false because even though bariatric surgery gives you an advantage in losing weight, it does not guarantee that you do so. You need to do a lot of work yourself, change your eating habits and lifestyle and strictly observe those changes.
Myth: Bariatric surgery leaves big ugly scars.
Reality: This is not true. Today’s technology, laparoscopic surgery (conducted with the help of a small camera that shows the doctor precisely where everything is and does not require a large incision) and trained surgeons with years of experience ensure minimal post-op scarring.
Myth: Women who have undergone bariatric surgery will not be able to conceive.
Reality: This is false. A bariatric surgery does not affect the chances of getting pregnant in any way. You do have to wait a few years after the surgical intervention, but after that, you have the green light to do so. The waiting period is required so that your weight can stabilise, as pregnancy is known to affect it to a great degree.
Myth: Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery develop mineral and vitamin deficiencies.
Reality: This is true to a certain extent. However, this can be remedied with a balanced and strategically designed diet. Our nutritionist Anni Laas will prescribe exactly what and in which quantities you should eat and drink after the surgery. Our team also includes experienced nutrition specialist Erik Orgu, who has prepared special delicious recipes specifically for patients who have undergone bariatric surgery.
Myth: Bariatric surgery means that the stomach is stapled shut.
Reality: This is not true. Several bariatric surgeries are designed to reduce the amount of food consumed. For instance, in the case of a gastric balloon procedure, the stomach is fitted with a balloon filled with sterile liquid, which creates the feeling of fullness and reduces appetite. Some procedures affect the gastrointestinal tract and the absorption of nutrients and calories. NB! You can find the best and most suitable way to reduce weight medically by consulting your doctor.
According to The Health Clinic surgeon Dr Rein Adamson, bariatric surgeries, like other similar surgeries, may cause some complications. “However, these are more specific. In addition to common complications such as bleeding and problems with wounds, the new connections may cause the contents of the stomach or intestines to leak into the abdominal cavity,” says Dr Adamson and adds that a trained and experienced bariatric surgeon must be quick to react in such cases.
“Today’s bariatric surgeries only take 90 minutes maximum thanks to surgeons’ extensive experience, which decreases the chance of possible complications considerably. We use high-quality tools and extra sutures for additional security to avoid leaks,” Dr Adamson assures that these are all very safe procedures with a relatively quick recovery period.
