Lip lift can give your lips a plumper, more youthful look. A lip lift surgery is a permanent lip treatment as opposed to the temporary results of using lip fillers and can even provide a better and more natural result.

As we age, the ligaments and the skin lose their elasticity and begin to droop and sag. The philtrum is a perfect example of facial structure drooping. This usually results in the pink part of the lip “rolling” inward which gives the appearance of thinning. Additionally, the upper lip falls downward and might start to cover the upper teeth which can make the mouth appear much older.

Long philtrum is not only a problem that affects the aged skin alone. Some people are born with a relatively long philtrum that makes their lips seem thin. Lip fillers will not help this situation as there is a limit to which you can increase the vertical length of the lips without them appearing like “duck lips”.

The subnasal bullhorn is one of the most common lip lift procedures. A surgeon will make an incision that’s typically hidden along the base of the nose where it’s less visible. The incision is often made in the shape of a bullhorn and some tissue will be removed, so the center, right, and left of the lip are all pulled up toward the nose.

A lip lift procedure not only increases the amount of pink lip tissue that is exposed but also makes your central upper teeth more visible, especially while you are talking or your lips are resting, giving you a more youthful and feminine look. An upper lip lift usually takes about an hour and leaves a discreet scar. Lip will look fuller immediately after a lip lift, but you won’t see the final effect until all the swelling, bruising, and scarring settle down—usually in about three months. It is an ideal solution for patients if they want their lips to look plump and rejuvenated but do not want to undergo frequent plumping procedures with fillers.

It’s a relatively easy plastic surgery procedure and it can give your mouth a more proportional look (relative to the rest of your face), enhance the shape of your lips, and expose more of your upper teeth, which creates a more youthful look.

Who’s a good candidate for a lip lift?

  • You are bothered by the appearance of your elongated philtrum
  • You are bothered by the thin-looking upper lips
  • You are looking for a way to make your lips look naturally plump

It is suitable for ageing patients but also younger people who haven’t achieved the look they want from fillers, or if they find that fillers make their lips look unnaturally plump or duck-like, may prefer a lip lift. Lip lift is a permanent solution, so it can be helpful for people who are tired of the upkeep of filler.

You’re not a good candidate if …

  • You don’t have a lot of space between the base of your nose and the top of your lip (typically about 1.5 centimeters)
  • You’re a smoker and you’re not willing or able to quit for the postsurgery healing period (about 2 to 4 weeks)
  • It’s a necessary to speak to your surgeon if you have diabetes or any other condition that affects your blood’s ability to clot, or if you have oral herpes.

After surgery

  • Plan to rest for 24 hours after the procedure.
  • For the first 48 hours is advisable to use an ice pack at home.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise in the weeks after.
  • Avoid smoking in the weeks after.
  • Avoid sleeping on your face and sleep with the head up, supported with a couple of pillows.
  • Avoid opening your mouth too wide.
  • A soft diet is recommended during this initial period and you may find helpful using a straw to drink water for the first couple of days.
  • Use a small toothbrush and brush carefully.
  • Keep your lips moisturized.
  • Clean the incisions following the doctor’s recommendations.
